Evolution Jazz Archtop covers all these styles with its flexible and highly-customizable approach. Extensively sampled, Evolution Jazz Archtop includes multiple round-robin in both pick directions and three dynamic layers for a wide range of expression. These specifications cover articulations such as sustains, palm mutes, fully muted notes, and natural harmonics. The library also includes extended performance techniques such as legato articulations and effects like string slaps, divebombs, fret noises, and others.

In developing Evolution Jazz Archtop, we’ve teamed up with Rosewood Recording Company, one of Utah’s most venerable recording studios. Guy Randle, the owner and recording engineer at Rosewood Recording Company, incorporates analog audio equipment to skillfully sculpt and emphasize the rich tonal qualities of the guitar. For the sampling session, Guy Randle worked with Rich Dixon, an award-winning session guitarist, international performer, and jazz theory/improvisation educator.

Mildon Plugins has announced that their Mildon Strummer 3 virtual acoustic guitar instrument VST plugin for Windows based host applications is now re-released as freeware.

Mildon Strummer is a crossover between a virtual guitar instrument and a MIDI effect. It’s been around since 2009 (originally priced at $49) and is now being re-released as a freeware VST plugin, along with several other older virtual effects that were developed by Mildon Plugins.

The coolest thing about Mildon Strummer is that it can be used to “strum” any other virtual instrument via MIDI, so long as the host application provides such MIDI routing capabilities. While operating in MIDI Out mode, the plugin sends MIDI data to the receiving instrument, meaning that it can work as an external “strumming generator” for third party instruments that don’t offer such functionality.

I’ve tested the plugin in MuLab Free in tandem with the freeware Grace sampler by One Small Clue and both the ease of the setup process and the resulting performance were quite satisfactory. The download pack includes a clearly written user manual that can definitely help with the initial setup, in case you run into some issues in your host application of choice.

Mildon Strummer can also work as a standalone acoustic guitar virtual instrument that can load external SoundFonts. It comes pre-loaded with a decent sounding acoustic guitar SoundFont which can actually work quite well for some basic background guitars in the context of a busier mix. Unfortunately, the plugin can’t load SFZ libraries.
